21 December 2007: Writers Strike - Behind the Scenes: WGA vs AMPTP (Joss Post)

Fans4writers

Joss Whedon has posted on Whedonesque to share this fun little video clip with us. Here's what he said:

Behind the Scenes: WGA v AMPTP. What are they really talking about? And why is this linked here?

Dear friends,

I have linked you to this because it made me laugh. And the observant eye will observe (eyely) that some of the people who made it are related at me from birthings! Also, it's true. Like, honestly.

There's been a lot of talk about the moguls' motivations, that they're greedy beyond greednitutedesnous, but the other point that needs to be stressed is that they are totally banoonoos. They have left the reservation. They have so much, they have forgotten the concept of human need. That's why this vid is a true vid, even if the sound is a little spotty.

Besides laughing at this, I have been scheming schemes. This strike is a watershed moment for creators, and I'm trying to make sure I'm on the side of the water that's going, or that I'm over the top of the... shed-thing... marching toward -- dripping toward the... future... of water... Damn this metaphor! I look a fool! Anyhoo, I'm working to make sure the writers stand strong, the community stays solvent, and the fans get what they deserve. (That sounds threatening, but I just mean stories.) Stay tuned.

And if I don't get the chance to post for a while, Happy holidays.

Forever sick, -j.

15 December 2007: Writers Strike - Another Joss Whedon Post

Fans4writers

Joss Whedon has once again shared his thoughts on the ongoing Writers Strike with us on Whedonesque. Here's what he said:

Who are the REAL heroes? Joss thinks happy thoughts. Nothing gross. Not THAT happy.

Who ARE the real heroes? Obviously Firefighters, relief workers, Doctors without Borders and anyone who, because of their parents brutal slaying, has become The Bat. But who are my personal heroes just of late? As I bid farewell to the warm coast and head off to rally the troops (and, with any luck, soak all dem scabs -- for Crutchie!) I think on who's out there getting it done...

1) Well, if you've followed my favorite link of the year, you know my real heroes are the AMPTP -- or more specifically, John Aboud and Michael Colton, the writers who put up that brilliant site. How brilliant? The AMPTP (the real ones, the guys who live under bridges scaring children) actually issued a statement griping about it! Dude! They said many rank and file WGA members found it too over-the-top. Yeeeeeahh...... I know those guys. They're sitting over there with the animation writers who choose not to join the Guild.

Oh! And in the same statement, the AMPTP throws a dart at #2....

2) Star Trek peeps. Both professional and fannish. Yeah, the PR guys knew that even MENTIONING the Star Trek picket shows what a bunch of nerds we are. Yeah, guys? Last time I checked, Star Trek was a cultural phenomenon, a cash cow for the Studio, and a breeding ground for some of the best Sci-Fi writers (hell, best writers) I know. IN FACT, the VERY last time I checked, I saw an hour-long episode of Star Trek (The New Voyages) made entirely by fans that had great production values and an insightful, emotionally resonant script. Now, what studio financed that again? Hmmm.

3) Speaking of writers grown in the Trek lab, here's my next two heroes: First up is Ronald D. Moore, not just for Battlestar, but for doing all the talking at the pencils2mediamoguls event. Talk about taking the hit! I was so relieved not have to speak I could have poured pencils all day. (It's actually weirdly gratifying: they poured out like a river over rocks, all white and splashy-sounding. Kinda peaceful.) Thanks, Ron!

4) Jane Espenson. 'Cause she's been helping other writers and aspiring writers since long before it became a necessity, and she's still kicking it hardcore, mentoring and blogging and even making signs. Classy type.

5) Firefighters. Seriously. Fire is really hot.

6) Jaime Paglia, who started the whole movement to get this party started in the rest of the country, beginning with his home turf. If anyone is wondering whether to go to the Boston rally, I got just two words for you: Conflict Diamonds. I don't know what that means. Those are just the words I had. But I know it's gonna be a fun event, and I'm gonna do two things I didn't do in LA: Make a speech (long fancy WORDS, you know it) and sign any damn thing someone sticks in front of me. We're yakkin', we're marching, we're hitting a bookstore and after that I just might keep hanging. So spread the word. The media needs to see BODIES. DO NOT SEND YOUR ASTRAL PROJECTION. Seriously, they don't show up on film and they're wicked flammable. Show up in person, so I can remind you that

7) is you all. As well you know.

See you in the Township of Beans. Happily Thoughting, -j.

ps If you're in LA that day, you definitely want to check out the insanely exciting comedy venue Marti helped cook up to aid non-writers affected by the strike. Eddie Izzard, Sarah Silverman, The MF D, Patton Oswalt... Marti only didn't attain hero staus because she arranged all this for when I'm out of town (Cough!...glass eye... cough!....)

Power to the people! For actual real.

6 December 2007: Writers Strike - Joss Whedon Posts about Mutant Enemy Day

Fans4writers

Mutant Enemy Strike Day is tomorrow and Joss Whedon has posted on Whedonesque with a weather update. Here's what he said:

Countdown... to Adventure! (or picketing). As Mutant enemy day approaches, Joss considers what to wear (red), what to bring (powdered milk) and what this 'hygiene' everyone's recommending is all about.

A couple of things before the big day. First of all Marti Noxon has tried to HIJACK this entire site for some 'cause'. She forwarded this letter she wanted me to print:

"We think it would be unbelievably amazing if Joss were able to tell whomever might be reading his blog for info on the Friday picket that, as a part of the whole thing, the WGA is doing a Holiday Harvest Food drive for local food banks (that have reached an all-time low in donations, recently) and we're asking everyone who can to bring jars of peanut butter, cans of tuna, and tons of powdered milk. In this way, besides just making a statement in solidarity and support of the WGA strike, we can also be re-stocking the shelves of the local food banks and feeding the poor and hungry of our community."

Like I'd print something so depressing! This event is about one thing: my famousnessness. First everyone's all about 'the strike', now it's 'helping people'... let's not lose sight of the point, people! You can't spell M.E. without, well, me.

Powdered milk, Cans of tuna, peanut butter. Other non-perishables will also be gratefully accepted, but those are the key groups. If you get the chance. 'Cause, me aside (for as long as I can stand it), supporting the strike and supporting the community are all part of the same thing. No one in this country should be hungry. I won't get on the soapbox ('cause it's too big to fit on the one I'm already on) but totin' a can really would mean a lot.

MAN DOWN! Yes, Alexis Denisof had to leave town and will not be able to attend. On the bright side, HE HAS A GLASS EYE! No, he totally doesn't, I'm just bummed and lashing out. We'll miss him, but I'm still gathering troops, so stay tuned. (Stay logged?)

RAIN! Man, I'm just harshing your mellow tonght, aren't I? Scattered showers predicted. It was prettty boily today, but who knows. Be prepared! Wear a snowsuit AND a bikini! I'm not frightened. I am unwavering. Nothing will stop us from picketing, unless there's a single fluffy cloud, in which case I'm just gonna panic and go scab.

I look forward to seeing you all, except the people I won't be seeing, like ol' glass eye and the people who live in New Zealand. (Go New Zealand! Road Warrior! Shrimp on the Barbie! G'day, and... and... wait... oh God! WETA! I meant to say WETA! Jeez, I'm losing fans by the boatload here. I gotta stop the bleeding and end this post.)

Bye for now, -j.

6 December 2007: Writers Strike - Mutant Enemy Day Joss Post

Fans4writers

Joss Whedon has posted a little news on who may be attending Mutant Enemy Day at Fox on Friday. Here's what he said:

Thespians To Grace Protestation. A few actors have signed on for the M.E. picket. BUT WHICH ONES?

I can now confirm, after a lot of pleading and a couple of totally false promises to create a series for him, that the guy who did the 'goats' voice-over for the phone at Wolfram & Hart WILL be attending the picket! As will Numfar of the Deathwok Clan and the doctor River stabs in the throat on the internet! Yay! So many stars! Lucky, lucky you! (Numfar will not dance. Just so we're clear.)

Sadly, I haven't gotten confirmations from any other actors except Eliza Dushku, Alexis Denisof, Nathan Fillion, Summer Glau and Amy Acker. But I'm sure someone cool will call me back any minute now. Gotta hope, right?

I tried to post this on fans4writers, but Whedonesque remains the only website I can successfully navigate. Maybe that should be your slogan! Whedonesque: so simple even Joss can use it! You know. If you need a slogan for... some reason.

Leave me! -goatphoneguy

18 November 2007: Writers' Strike - Pencils2MediaMoguls

fans4writers

Joss Whedon heard that fans were wanting to make a show of support to the Writers' Strike and send a message to the studios at the same time. He and some other showrunners got together and came up with Pencils2MediaMoguls. I'll let him explain.

Arise and Seize the Pencils... Our Evil(it's not evil) Master(we're not masters) Plan is ready to unleash(it's not a dog).(!)

Well, United Hollywood has fine-tuned the pencil concept into an organized and potentially awesomely visual penstravaganza! Witness the electronic mail messed forth to showrunner types:

Pencils2MediaMoguls

This week, United Hollywood (the blog) met with a group of showrunners who have particularly vocal fan bases. We discussed the fans’ eagerness to put their energy to use in a unified campaign, and this is what we came up with:

Several fan sites have suggested sending pencils into the networks and studios, and some of them are already doing it. It’s a great idea, and we’d like to take it a step further – get everyone buying pencils at the same time, from the same vendor, to be delivered in masses (like the peanuts were for Jericho.) All the fandoms working together, in concert. It seems that the conglomerates take it for granted that the fans will always be there to purchase content, that their concerns about the strike don’t matter. This is a chance for the fans to show that they do matter.

The campaign itself is fairly simple. We’d like to start it right away, and it goes like this:

Point the fans to http://unitedhollywood.blogspot.com/, where there will be a banner or button allowing them to click through to buy boxes of pencils. The pencils are plain wooden #2’s, and the company uses sustainable farming for the wood (seriously. They do.) The pricing will be “a buck a box.” (Sustainably harvested wood pencils + PayPal cost per transaction puts us a little higher than the cost of a box if you buy at Office Depot, sorry.) If there’s any money left over, it will be donated to the Union Solidarity Fund, which is a nonprofit for non-WGA members affected by the strike.

When fans click to buy the pencils, they can choose to identify the show they are supporting if they want. (This will generate a database of fans by show – among other things, allowing showrunners to thank fans by group if they want to.)

The pencils will be delivered in bulk, by trucks, like the peanuts were. The deliveries will be to the 6 CEOs of the 6 congloms (Disney, News Corp, Viacom, Time Warner, CBS, GE) one by one – we’ll probably start with GE. If we get enough to pencils to do all 6, then we will. If we don’t, we’ll concentrate on one or two.

If the logistics can be worked out, showrunners who choose to can take part in a “load the pencils” photo op – unpacking the boxes of pencils and shoveling them into bins or boxes for transport to the CEO’s. The visual has the potential to be worth a thousand words – for the fans as well as the general public.

We will suggest that the fans send a message similar to this: “We’re all on the same page. Make a fair deal.”

This has the potential to be a historic moment in fan history – the first time that all fandoms band together to show that they are a force to be reckoned with to the corporate world. Given the passion and commitment the fans are already showing, this seems a good way to both show our appreciation and respect, as well as giving them the direction they’ve been requesting.

We hope you’ll be willing to join us in this effort. It won’t be our last.

Pretty offical sounding, huh? Like grown-ups would do. Well, I, as a showrunner... (but with no show... If I have no show, am I a showrunner? What would Jubal Early say?) Anyhoo I'm a tirribly impahtant Hollyville muckity so my opinion counts oodles. And I think this will be very cool. Let's make our (unsharpened) point. I seriously want to spend a day wading in actual pencils with a big ol' snowshovel. And I want the Execs to understand that forcing one show off the air can rouse the public to make themselves heard in a fairly dramatic fashion, but forcing ALL of them off the air... well, might just be a tetch more dramatical-er. Now you all kinda got your own Union. And it's time to strike.

"CBS and Fox, they think were nothin'! Are we nothin'? NO! CBS and Fox they think they got us, Do they got us? NO! Even though we all wear scarves and glasses, We're a union, just by sayin' so... And the world will know!"

So here goes.

Yours ever, -j.

16 November 2007: Dollhouse - Joss Whedon Posts on Whedonesque

Joss Whedon

When the news about Dollhouse broke, Joss Whedon posted his thoughts on Whedonesque. Here's what he said:

Hi guys. What's going on?

I remember I was having lunch with Eliza, and thinking she was shiny, so shiny... and then I woke up here. Weird.

Pretty much everything has been said already, but I wanted to check in and give y'all muchas smooches for the support. This was all unexpected, but what can I say? When it's right, it's right. Right?

I'm kind of freaking out about the concept. It's fascinatng from every angle -- it won't stop talking to me. It's sweet and creepy and exciting and very human. I hope it doesn't suck, 'cause in my head it's fairly righteous.

As for young Minear's 'Miracle Man', that's still on -- he's agreed to consult for me while developing his own thing. He'll be doing the work of two near-men!

Updates will be updatified. Keep watching the skies. xo -j.

16 November 2007: Dollhouse - New Joss Whedon TV Series!

Joss Whedon

Many of you will already have read about this, but as I have been away on holiday I have been unable to update the site. At the beginning of the month, Joss Whedon contacted Kristin from E! Online to give her the news that he has a new TV series in the works. In an unprecedented move, Fox have picked up the show for seven episodes without a pilot. And is if Joss back on TV wasn't news enough, the series, Dollhouse will star Eliza Dushku as the lead role, Echo, and Tim Minear will also be involved.

Here's what Fox had to say about the series:

Echo (Eliza Dushku) [is] a young woman who is literally everybody's fantasy. She is one of a group of men and women who can be imprinted with personality packages, including memories, skills, language—even muscle memory—for different assignments. The assignments can be romantic, adventurous, outlandish, uplifting, sexual and/or very illegal. When not imprinted with a personality package, Echo and the others are basically mind-wiped, living like children in a futuristic dorm/lab dubbed the Dollhouse, with no memory of their assignments—or of much else. The show revolves around the childlike Echo's burgeoning self-awareness, and her desire to know who she was before, a desire that begins to seep into her various imprinted personalities and puts her in danger both in the field and in the closely monitored confines of the Dollhouse.

And here's how Joss describes it:

The idea is those with the money or connections can access this secret highly illegal facility where they can basically fulfill their greatest fantasies. Most people assume that means sex—and on an occasion it does, because that is a lot of people's fantasies—but it's basically scenarios. They can basically reenact scenarios of romance, adventure or anything perfectly, because they become the person that you want them to be—they become that person. They don't act like that person, they are not a robot pretending, they become that person, and then they forget all about it. The problem is the character of Echo, Eliza Dushku's character, stops forgetting. She doesn't completely remember, but she does realize she is a person, and that she might have been a person before she did this, and she doesn't know what that is.

This news item will no doubt be followed by loads of interviews and comments from Joss et al, starting with an interview with Joss Whedon and Eliza Dushku from E! Online.

OCTOBER

17 October 2007: Serenity - Alan Tudyk Spreads Sequel Rumours

Serenity

About a week ago Alan Tudyk was quoted in an interview as having given stated that there were talks ongoing about a Serenity Sequel after the Collector's edition DVD had sold so well. This news rapidly spread across the interweb and there was much speculation as to whether the facts had been mis-construed/mis-quoted by the interviewer. At the time that the rumours started, I happened to be at a convention which Morena Baccarin was attending. I had the opportunity to ask her directly if she had heard anything about a possible sequel and she said that she had not. Therefore, I did not post the 'news' item on this site.

However, Alan Tudyk recently attended the Amageddon convention and repeated his assertion that there are talks about a Serenity Sequel, and he said he had this information from Nathan Fillion. You can watch a video clip of this at www.nathanfilliononline.com. If you don't see the video scroll down the page a little and click on the link provided.

Of course, until Joss Whedon and/or Universal make an official announcement it is still all rumour and speculation, but it is well-informed rumour and speculation. Joss Whedon recently said in an interview that good sales of the Collectors Edition DVD where what was needed to make Universal interested in making a sequel and Alan certainly seems to believe that there is something in the works. When and if we get an announcement/confirmation/denial, you can be sure you will hear it here... well probably second.

29 July 2007: Joss Whedon at Comic Con - Fray, Ripper, New Horror Film and more

Joss Whedon

Joss Whedon had a panel at Comic Con yesterday and, whilst he had hinted he may have some news, no one was quite expecting quite the amount of news that came out of the one hour session.

Sporting a t-shirt featuring the character Dandelion from his new web-comic, Sugarshock, Joss gave us the following news:

  1. Goners is still in the works, he has notes from the studio which he agrees with and is working on.
  2. He has just finished writing a 'horror movie to end all horror movies' with Drew Goddard called A Cabin in the Woods.
  3. The long-awaited, Buffy spin-off series, Ripper (featuring Giles) will finally be made. Anthony Stewart Head and he BBC are still on board for the 90 minute feature to be made, hopefully sometime next year.
  4. Browncoats were given a glimmer of hope for a Serenity Sequel when Joss confirmed that Universal made the Special Editions DVD because people kept buying the regular DVD.
  5. He is writing a short ballet for Summer Glau called The Serving Girl.
  6. Buffy spin-off comic, Fray will be returning.
  7. The Angel Season 6 Comic, Angel: After the Fall will be a 'maxi-series' consisting of at least 12 issues which will continue the story where it left off at the end of the TV series.
  8. He knows what the end of Buffy Season 8 will be and what happens in Season 9! Also, Oz will be making an appearance in the comic at some point.

Phew. That's an awful lot of news to digest, but it looks like the Joss-drought is finally over and we have loads of good things in store for us in the coming months.

Joss Whedon

Speaking with IGN.com, Nathan Fillion revealed that he may be working on a new project with Joss Whedon. Nathan said "Two days after Joss finished writing Wonder Woman, which he's no longer doing, but he'd just finished writing it, I sent him an email that said, 'Okay, you've had two days to relax so it's time to start thinking about your next project'. I wrote a couple of scenes of this one particular project and I sent it to him. I said, 'Look, you writing it and making it awesome and me starring in it, let's go!'" Pressed for further information Nathan revealed. "I don't want to tell you because it's still in development, I've got my fingers in it and I want to be involved. It's a Western. I'll tell you that, it's a western."

9 March 2007: Serenity - New Special Edition DVD

Serenity

Universal are to release a new 2 disc Special Edition DVD of Serenity in July 2007. Whilst Universal have not released any details of what the disc will include, Joss Whedon posted on Whedonesque with some news. Here's what he said:

Yes, fanlings, there is going to be a 2 disc 'Special Edition' released this summer. You know why? 'Cause the 1 disc 'Normal Edition' has sold so well -- so maybe a little self-back-patting is in order for you guys. Way to keep her in the air.

It's too early to be sure what the Special Edition will contain, but here are some things we're going for:

NEW KEY ART.

Cast commentary -- assuming I can get a decent number of them in one room. They're very busy people, I'm happy to say.

NEW KEY ART.

The region 4 goodies, obviously.

The Tam Sessions.

KEY NEW ART.

New Yub Yub, and Greedo shoots first. So does that kid outside the trading station, the pilot who destroyed Haven, and Kaylee. And Richard Dreyfuss goes INSIDE the mothership.

KEW RAT YEN.

An alternate ending, if you turn it off early.

Proof of the existence of a benevolent higher power -- uh, I mean, new key art.

Mice.

And honestly, what more do you want? Don't answer that, I already know and it's unseemly. But I'm pretty excited here. Back to work, -j.

Take my Yub,
Take Yub Yub,
Yub Yub tak the Yub from Meee...dichlorians....

4 February 2007: Satin Tights No Longer - Joss Whedon Will Not Pen Wonder Woman

Joss Whedon

Joss Whedon posted on Whedonesque yesterday to be the first to tell us he will no longer be involved in writing and directing Wonder Woman. Here's what he said:

"SATIN TIGHTS NO LONGER. Joss will not be fighting for our rights after all.

You (hopefully) heard it here first: I'm no longer slated to make Wonder Woman. What? But how? My chest... so tight! Okay, stay calm and I'll explain as best I can. It's pretty complicated, so bear with me. I had a take on the film that, well, nobody liked. Hey, not that complicated.

Let me stress first that everybody at the studio and Silver Pictures were cool and professional. We just saw different movies, and at the price range this kind of movie hangs in, that's never gonna work. Non-sympatico. It happens all the time. I don't think any of us expected it to this time, but it did. Everybody knows how long I was taking, what a struggle that script was, and though I felt good about what I was coming up with, it was never gonna be a simple slam-dunk. I like to think it rolled around the rim a little bit, but others may have differing views.

The worst thing that can happen in this scenario is that the studio just keeps hammering out changes and the writer falls into a horrible limbo of development. These guys had the clarity and grace to skip that part. So I'm a free man.

Well, sorta. There is that "Goners" movie I can finally finish polishing, and plenty of other things in the hopper I've wanted to pursue. I'm as relieved as I am disappointed, and both of those things lead to drink, so that's a plus. Truly, you may be hearing some interesting things brewing in the coming months. But all potential jets therein will be visible.

But most importantly, I never have to answer THAT question again!!!! And you don't have to link to every rumor site! Finally and forever: I never had an actress picked out, or even a consistant front-runner. I didn't have time to waste on casting when I was so busy air-balling on the script. (No! Rim! There was rim!) That's the greatest relief of all. I can do interviews again!

Thanks for your time. You are the people who make the world go 'round. Or, no, science does that.

-j.

ps All right, it was Cobie Smulders. Sorry, Cobes.

12 January 2007: Can't Stop The Serenity 2007

Can't Stop The Serenity

Planning for the 2007 Can't Stop The Serenity screenings is well underway and to date organisers in 39 cities expressed an interest. For those who missed out on last year's Can't Stop The Serenity screenings and are wondering what it is all about, this is an effort to both spread the word about Serenity and raise money for charity at the same time. Last year 41 fan-organised screenings of Serenity took place worldwide on or around 23rd June (Joss Whedon's birthday) and raised over $65,000 for Equality Now. This year the aim is to have even more cities and raise even more money. To find out if there is a screening already arranged in your city, or how to organise one yourself go to www.cantstoptheserenity.com.
